Decorating Christmas trees with colorful and sparkling Christmas ornaments and Christmas decorations are among the most enjoyable activities around the Christmas time. As with Christmas cards, Christmas ornaments were first introduced in England and Europe before the Americans caught on the concept of decorating Christmas trees with beautiful Christmas ornaments.

The first Christmas ornaments

Decorating Christmas trees was a tradition in England and Germany since the 1700s or even earlier. However, the United States did not start celebrating Christmas religiously until the 1800s. Christmas ornaments did not appear in the United States until immigrants from Germany and England brought them over in the 1840s.

In the 1880s, F. W. Woolworth decided to stock his stores with German made Christmas ornaments. Christmas ornaments weren't selling well at first but later on it became so popular that F. W. Woolworth made a fortune selling Christmas ornaments. In the early days, Christmas ornaments were mostly German hand cast lead and hand blown glass. Over time, Christmas ornaments got more sophisticated and more expensive.
