Christmas Cards
Every year millions of Christmas cards
exchange hands. The tradition of giving Christmas cards started
in the late 1800s. The history of Christmas cards as we know it
today started out in London although some primitive forms of
Christmas cards had been used before that.
Who invented Christmas cards? The history
of Christmas Cards
Although some forms of Christmas cards had
been used before the late 1800s, official Christmas cards
weren't invented until the time of Sir Henry Cole. Sir Henry
Cole was an Englishman and an inventor in the 1800s in London.
He commissioned a well known illustrator called Horsley to make
him a card to send to his friends and associates to wish them a
happy Christmas. Soon printed Christmas cards (as well as other
types of greeting cards) became very popular in England and
Germany. In 1875, the idea of Christmas cards began to catch on
in America when the Boston lithographer called Louis Prang
published cards. For his introduction of Christmas cards and
other greeting cards to America, Louis Prang was named the
father of American Christmas cards.
